Rock Star: Hiltz Marble and Granite Print E-mail
THE STYLE: Stones of distinction and pure elegance.

IN A NUTSHELL: Owner Beverlee-Ann Hiltz is one of the only female Certified Stone Designers in the world and has been in the business for over 19 years. A friend owned a quarry in Israel and introduced her to the beauty of stone. Hiltz was then hooked on learning everything she could about rock. After living and operating her business in New York and Toronto, Hiltz decided to move the company headquarters to Barrie in 2003. Her 10,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility, located in the city’s south end, includes a design centre and an elaborate showroom of products fabricated right on site. Hiltz offers a full range of granite, marble, limestone and slate. She also carries a wide variety of porcelain and ceramic tiles. With more than 20 employees, including qualified templators and installers, Hiltz refuses to use any sub-contractors for her clients. By training her staff, she can control her own workmanship. She also stands by her workmanship with a lifetime warranty. Hiltz is very proud of her Fabrication Manager, Angelo D’Agostino. He has over 33 years’ experience and Hiltz says, “I am so lucky to have him on board; he is simply the best in the business.”

THE ANGLE: Hiltz has a client list that spans the globe and she creates and designs stone for many of the world’s best-known buildings, including the Burj Georgio Armani Hotel in Dubai, the St. Regis Hotel, San Francisco, the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, SoHo Trump in New York City and stadiums in Dallas, Texas. She has worked with celebrities like Cindy Crawford, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Dallas Cowboys CEO Jerry Jones. The limestone for the Armani project, located in the world’s tallest building, comes from Hiltz’s own stash of Wiarton Ledge Rock. In all, 2,000 tons of rock will be used for the project. This will be the first in a chain of Armani hotels. Her blocks are shipped to a company in Italy, where, under a patented process, they are put into a vacuum chamber and shot with resin to strengthen the stone. They are then vein-cut into 10 mm slabs, as per Hiltz’s design. Hiltz says, “this was the only way we could keep our Canadian stone in the project, due to the weight restrictions.” Once they are resined, they are then shipped to Dubai for installation.

UNIQUE: Hiltz Marble and Granite is famous for its signature one-and-a-half-inch bevel, invisible edge. Hiltz says her granite counters are all colour-matched and they line up perfectly. “I sell only first quality material,” Hiltz says. “A lot of people are importing from China and it’s second-grade quality. I refuse to do that.” All Hiltz granite has a resin formation surface coat. Hiltz pays the quarries a higher price for this process. This way, she explains, clients never have to worry about sealing their granite for life.

THE MISSION: Hiltz sources only the best granite from quarries in India, Turkey and Brazil. Clients can work with a qualified cabinet designer to ensure the products they order will fit perfectly into their homes. Everything is measured by laser, which can pinpoint the exact angle of the wall. “Cardboard bends and it can’t get into the corners,” Hiltz explains. “Our lasers are precise.” All fabricating is done on site, and then expertly installed by staff.

THE PRODUCTS: Endless. Stone fireplaces, stone sinks, stone desks, raw slabs, as well as fabricated kitchen and bathroom countertops. “Our clients can come into our facility and pick out their own slabs. We ask our clients to bring in their wall colours, their door samples and their floor samples, and we will help them design their stone to fit their home, as well as their budget.”

FAVOURITES: Hiltz knows her stone. Her own home, just north of Barrie, is a showcase of only the best products available in the marketplace. Her stunning fireplace surround is fabricated from a 500-pound slab of Black Galaxy granite from India. It took seven men to install the surround. Her dining room table, with three-inch thick legs, was fabricated from solid slabs of Blue Pearl granite from Finland. Her floors are all slate and her master en suite is wrapped in marble from Italy and Portugal.
